WhatsApp Business Calling: a practical guide

What it is, how inbound and outbound calls work, and how to route them to your IVR, queues, agents and AI bots.

What is WhatsApp Business Calling?

WhatsApp Business Calling lets customers place a voice call to your business from inside the WhatsApp app, and lets your agents call customers back over WhatsApp. The audio runs over data as HD Opus at 48kHz — there are no carrier minutes, and it is typically 60–80% cheaper than traditional voice.

How do inbound calls work?

A customer taps Call in your WhatsApp chat. The call lands in VoiceStream and follows the same dialplan as your phone lines: it can ring an IVR, a queue, a specific agent, or an AI voice bot, and fall through to voicemail. To the customer it feels like a normal WhatsApp call.

How do outbound calls work?

An agent clicks Call on a contact. Their browser extension rings first; once they pick up, the customer’s WhatsApp rings and the audio is bridged. The permission flow is handled automatically and respects Meta’s 24-hour customer-service window, so in-window calls dial straight through without an extra prompt.

Can AI answer WhatsApp calls?

Yes. Because WhatsApp calls use the same routing as voice, you can point an inbound number at a realtime AI voice bot or a knowledge-base smart bot, with seamless hand-off to a human agent when needed.

Is it the official API?

Yes. VoiceStream uses Meta’s official WhatsApp Cloud API, and each tenant connects their own WhatsApp Business Account — not a grey-market gateway.
