Cloud PBX vs on-premise PBX: how to choose
Hosted convenience vs on-site control — and why VoiceStream lets you have either, with the same software.
Last updated: 26 June 2026
A cloud PBX is a business phone system hosted and managed for you in a provider’s data centre; an on-premise PBX runs on hardware you own and operate. Cloud wins on speed of setup and zero maintenance; on-premise wins on data residency and control. With VoiceStream you don’t have to pick a camp — the same software runs either way.
What is a cloud PBX?
A cloud (or hosted) PBX delivers extensions, call queues, IVRs and trunks as a service. You log in from a browser, point your numbers at it, and the provider handles servers, updates and uptime. There is nothing to rack and no telecom hardware to buy.
What is an on-premise PBX?
An on-premise PBX runs on a server or appliance (for example a Grandstream UCM) on your own network. Your calls and recordings stay on your premises, which matters for strict data-residency or compliance requirements, and you can keep working during an internet outage using local trunks.
Which should I choose?
- Choose cloud if you want to start in minutes, avoid maintenance, and scale up and down easily.
- Choose on-premise if you need data to stay in-house, already own SIP hardware, or operate where connectivity is unreliable.
Do I have to choose?
No. VoiceStream is the same platform whether we host it or you run it on your own hardware — so you can start in the cloud and move on-premise later (or run a hybrid) without changing tools or retraining your team.
